The iPhone 4′s retina display is great. Watching HD movies on the phone is amazing and the simplicity of downloading a movie from iTunes only adds to the experience. But try holding your phone for two and a half hours… not fun. To solve this problem, many iPhone accessory makers have created iPhone stands or cases with stands built in. The Piolo stand is a minimalist stand for the iPhone 4 that is lightweight, and allows you to prop your phone up in both the landscape and portrait directions. But is it really as good as it sounds? Read on after the break.
The first thing one notices about the Piolo is how light it is. The stand is a mere 3.1 grams and is very slim, and has a beautiful, minimalist design. The way the Piolo works is that the user slips the iPhone into the small hole, and this is very different from many standard iPhone stand designs. Most DIY iPhone cases, such as this one, only offer one viewing mode and consist of the iPhone sitting on something.
The design of the Piolo is both good and bad. The design allows it to slip securely over your iPhone, but does not support other devices (cases such as the GoGoStand do), and the iPhone 4 must not have a case on it. I have the Ghost Armor screen protector around the full body of my phone, and the material does allow the Piolo to slip around it, but I have to be careful, or the Ghost Armor might peel. Another cool feature is that a small hole is provided, so you can put your Piolo into a keychain.
As far as viewing angles are considered, the Piolo is great in both landscape and portrait modes. Though there is only one angle supported for both modes of viewing, the angle chosen is perfect and I use my iPhone more as a desk clock as well now. The portrait mode is very useful when you need to do something while looking off of info from your phone.
The Piolo comes in 5 colors currently; cyan, yellow, magenta, black, and white. The price for the stand is great, at only ~$6, but you will have to pay for shipping if you live outside the United Kingdom. Overall, this stand is great and I highly recommend it.
